Janice Jaguszewski, director of the University’s Science & Engineering Library since 2003, was appointed Interim Director of the Health Science Libraries on October 4, 2011, while plans are underway for a national recruitment of a permanent director. Janice has 21 years of experience at the University of Minnesota Libraries, and has served as the mathematics librarian, geology librarian, and collections coordinator for the physical sciences and engineering before moving into her current role. As director of the Science & Engineering Library, she provides direction for the Libraries’ media literacy program, which integrates the use of media and the production of multimedia projects into and across the curriculum. In addition, she directly supports the services of the SMART Learning Commons, a collaborative effort between the Libraries and the Office of Undergraduate Education that brings together peer research consultants, tutoring services, test preparation, peer-assisted learning, and media production support in library locations on both the Minneapolis and St. Paul campuses. For the past four years, she has co-sponsored the University Libraries’ Information Literacy Collaborative, providing direction for the Libraries’ integration of information and communication skills into the campus curriculum. She also provides leadership for the Science & Engineering Library’s initiative on educational programming for faculty, staff and students, focusing most recently on data management, ethical use of information, personal information management, and a student portfolio program of professional skills.

Janice is active in the Science and Technology Section of the Association of College and Research Libraries, and has published and presented on future roles for academic librarians, professional development for librarians, and various topics related to the transition from print to electronic resources.  She received her MS in Library and Information Science and her AB in English with a minor in mathematics from the University of Illinois, Urbana-Champaign.
