Fines

Rates

Library materials are due by the date given when an item is checked out. Library patrons are encouraged to ask for a receipt when checking out and checking in items.

Overdue notices are courtesy notices only. Failure to receive an overdue notice (via email or USPS) will not be accepted as a reason to cancel fines. Fines are assessed at the rates listed below. Borrowing privileges will be blocked due to unpaid fines. Rates are subject to change without prior notice.

Overdue 1 week loans/4 weeks loans/long term loans - $.50 per day

Overdue 1 week loans/4 weeks loans/long term loans - Recalled rate - $1.00 per day

Overdue 1 day loans - $1.00 per hour

Overdue 3 day loans/Recall rate - $1.00 per day

Overdue 3 hour loans - $1.00 per hour

Overdue ILL loans - $3.00 per day

Replacement Costs and Processing Fees

Library materials not returned will be subject to maximum overdue fines, replacement costs, and a $15.00 processing fee ($30 for ILL). Borrowers may replace the lost item with a copy of the same or a later edition in good condition (Technical Services makes all final decisions if a copy is acceptable or not). Overdue and processing fees will still apply. If an item that has been billed as lost is returned, the replacement cost is waived, but the patron is still responsible for processing and overdue fines. Should a patron pay for a lost item and later find and return it to the library within 3 months from the payment date, the patron will be refuned for the replacement item only. Overdue and damaged items not paid after thirty days will automatically be transferred to your Student Account. Lost items not paid after 90 days will automatically be transferred to your Student Account (or sooner if patron borrowing privileges are due to expire).

Fines incurred at the Bio-Medical Library can be paid by cash, check, credit card or transferred to a Student Account. Please see below for information on each payment option.

Academic Holds

Students will be blocked from borrowing library materials when unpaid fines and fees reach $10 or more. Faculty and staff are blocked when unpaid fees reach $250 or more. Additionally users are blocked from borrowing when they have not responded to Library notices or have unresolved issues such as overdue materials, unreturned recalled books or address problems.

The University of Minnesota Libraries places a hold on users academic records (meaning that students cannot register for University courses, get official or unofficial transcripts, or receive diploma) under two circumstances:

  • When library fines exceed $100
  • When library materials are not returned

Holds are removed when library fines are paid and/or when library materials are returned. Please contact the owning library with questions or concerns.

Questions or Disputes

If you have any questions about fines policies or wish to speak with the Bio-Medical Library Fines Clerk to discuss your fines, contact the Bio-Medical Library Circulation desk at 612-626-4045 or send e-mail to biomcirc@umn.edu to schedule an appointment.

Blocks and Borrowing Privileges

All library borrowers are subject to blocked borrowing privileges if they have overdue or lost materials or unpaid fines/fees. Due to system security procedures only selected staff are authorized to look at your records or to negotiate the removal of a block. You will NOT be subject to blocks if you return/renew your materials on a timely basis.

The library can provide you with a list of materials currently charged to you. If you need such a list contact the circulation desk (612-626-4045 or biomcirc@umn.edu). By law, this is private and confidential information, therefore issuing such lists is regulated by strict security procedures.

Mailing Address

The automated circulation system uses the address in your official University record. If you have listed a campus address, that is the address to which all notices will be sent. Please be sure your address is accurate. If the address in the University files is not current, you will not receive essential library communications. Students may change their address electronically through One Stop.

Staff and faculty may change their address through One Stop or contact their department.
