Natural Standard

Natural Standard is an international research collaboration that aggregates and synthesizes data on complementary and alternative therapies. Primary source of journal article access for the health sciences - the campus version provides full text access to all MEDLINE e-journals subscribed to by the University of Minnesota TC Libraries.


OVID, like PubMed, is an interface to search the MEDLINE database. It includes citations from the fields of medicine, public health, nursing, dentistry, veterinary medicine, and the basic biomedical sciences. MEDLINE is the National Library of Medicine's bibliographic database/article index that contains over 17 million references to journal articles. Coverage is from 1949 to the present. Over 5200 journals worldwide in over 37 languages are indexed.

Embase / Embase Classic

Embase is a biomedical and pharmacological database containing bibliographic records with citations, abstracts and indexing derived from biomedical articles in peer reviewed journals, and is especially strong in its coverage of drug and pharmaceutical research. Content covers 1974- Embase classic: a major biomedical and pharmaceutical database, is drawn from 43 Excerpta Medica biomedical and pharmacology print journals published between 1947 and 1973.

IBIDS - International Bibliographic Information on Dietary Supplements

IBIDS contains bibliographic records, including abstracts published in international scientific journals on the topic of dietary supplements, including vitamins, minerals, herbal and botanical supplements from the Office of Dietary Supplements at the NIH.

International Pharmaceutical Abstracts (IPA via OvidSP)

Provides information on all phases of the development and use of drugs and on professional pharmaceutical practice.

SciFinder is the best database for chemistry-related topics; you must register for an account before you can access SciFinder (note: access contractually restricted to current U of MN faculty, students and staff). SciFinder Scholar includes journal and patent literature with references as far back as 1907 as well as information on chemical regulatory data, suppliers, reactions, and substances. You will need to download and log in to VPN before you can access SciFinder from off-campus.

Web of Science (ISI)

Indexes over 11,000 international journals in the sciences, social sciences, and arts and humanities. Titles of the print equivalent are: Arts and Humanities Citation Index, Science Citation Index, and Social Sciences Citation Index. Coverage runs from 1975 to the present. Basic truncation symbol is the asterisk(*).

Cochrane Library

The Cochrane Library consists of a collection of regularly updated evidence-based health care databases. The Cochrane collection is designed to provide information and evidence to support health care decision-making. The available databases are: The Cochrane Database of Systematic Reviews (regularly updated reviews of the effects of health care interventions); Database of Abstracts of Reviews of Effectiveness: DARE (critical assessments and structured abstracts of good systematic reviews published elsewhere); The Cochrane Controlled Trials Register: CENTRAL (bibliographic information on controlled trials); The Cochrance Database of Methodology Reviews: CDMR (systematic reviews of methodological studies); Health Technology Assessment Database: HTA (information about health technology assessments); NHS Economic Evaluation Database: NHS EED (National Health Service (UK), structured abstracts of articles describing evaluations of health care interventions); browse by Cochrane Collaborative Review Group; and the Cochrane Reviewer's Handbook.

DynaMed Plus

DynaMed Plus is an evidence-based clinical decision support tool with content from a team of physicians. It is designed for use at point-of-care. Over 3,200 topic summaries covering diseases, disorders, diagnostics, and drugs are derived from peer reviewed journals and systematic evidence review databases.

The Johns Hopkins ABX Guide features up-to-date, authoritative, evidenced-based information on the treatment of infectious diseases to help you make decisions at the point of care.
