Borrowing Privileges

To check out material, U of M Faculty, Students, Staff must present a valid U Card & Friends of the Library (including MAA members) and Special Privilege Borrowers must present a borrowing Card.

  • Loan Periods vary depending on borrower status and type of material. Course Reserve items and Reference materials may have limited circulation.

Loan Period

  • 3-Hour/Overnight reserve materials may be checked out overnight after 4:00 p.m., but these materials must be returned within the first hour the Library is open on the following day.
  • Course Reserve materials must be returned directly to the lending library on or before the due date.

Renewals

Library materials must be renewed on or before the due date to avoid fines or the blocking of borrowing privileges.  All Library materials are subject to recall, and the recall due date supersedes all previous due dates.

Renew Library materials by:

  • Bringing your U Card or borrowing card to the Circulation Desk for immediate renewal on the system.
  • During business hours only: Calling (612) 624-4281, to speak with our staff but DO NOT leave a voice-mail message.

Items cannot be renewed if:

  • Your borrowing card does not permit renewals.
  • You have reached the renewal limit.
  • A recall or hold has been placed for another patron or for reserve.

Mailing Address

  • The automated circulation system uses the address in your official University record; please be sure your address is accurate or you will not receive essential library communications.
  • You may change your address electronically through the One Stop. 

Fines and Fee Rates

  • Patrons are responsible for knowing the due date for Library material when the item is checked out.
  • The due date can be checked by logging into Your Account.
  • Borrowing privileges may be blocked for overdue books or unpaid fines.
  • Items that are not returned or renewed on or before the date due will be assessed fines according to the rates listed below*.

Fines can be paid in the following ways:

  • Currently enrolled students have the option of transferring library fines to their Student Accounts by mailing a completed Fines Transfer Request to the Fines Office.
  • The Veterinary Medical Library DOES NOT accept cash or check payments.
  • You can pay your library fines by credit card through Wilson Library's Fines department. Please see the "Pay by Credit Card" section of the Paying Your Fines page.
  • Overdue fines not paid after thirty days will automatically be transferred to your Student Account.

Blocks, Replacement and Processing Costs, and Academic Holds

  • Student library accounts are blocked when unpaid fines and fees reach $10 or more.
  • Faculty and staff library accounts are blocked when unpaid fees reach $250 or more.
  • Blocks are placed on all patron records for overdue books and missing books regardless of any unpaid fees.
  • Materials that are not returned or renewed within four weeks of the due date will be declared lost.
  • You will be assessed the appropriate fine, the cost of the material, plus a non-refundable processing fee.
  • Refunds will not be issued after three months from the payment date.
  • Academic holds are placed on patron records when library fines exceed $100 and when library materials are not returned

Academic holds are removed when library fines are paid and when library materials are returned. Please contact the owning library with questions and concerns.
