Public Computing

Computer labs on the 2nd floor are for general study and are available on an first-come, first-served basis. Visitor access is granted at the 2nd floor service desk (valid government issued ID required). Additional computer workstations can be found on the 3rd floor.  

Productivity Computer Workstations

In addition to standard public computer workstations, the Bio-Medical Library's 2nd floor also houses seven specialized computer workstations featuring extra large monitors and a suite of productivity software. 

Available software includes: ArcGIS, Adobe Creative Suite, Audacity, iMovie, JMPPro, NVIVO, Open Refine, R, SPSS, SAS, and Tableau Public.  

External hard drives are availble for checkout at the 2nd floor service desk for projects that have large storge requirements.

Collaborative Computing

Learning Center Pods

Our learning center - just inside the library at our 2nd floor entrance - provides tables and computers for collaborative work.  

media:scape

Try our media:scape technology on our 2nd floor - which allows you to plug in your computing device to share and collaborate instantly.  The media:scape center provides a large table for group work and a 42 inch monitor to share content. The media:scape is available to UMN faculty, staff, and students on a first-come, first-served basis.

Data Visualization Center

The Data Visualization Center features a high-performance computer with specialized software as well as a 75 inch monitor and group seating area for presenting and sharing data on a larger scale.

Wireless Access

Wireless access is available throughout the Bio-Medical Library via the University’s network.
Scanning
Two computer scanners are available for public use on the 2nd floor of the Bio-Medical Library. Color and Black & White scans are available. Please see a library staff member for additional information and assistance. 

Printing Instructions

Printing is available on the 2nd floor of the Bio-Medical Library. Self-serve machines accept payment via Gopher GOLD on your U Card or copy card. Departmental users with EFS accounts may also use a departmental copy card.

  1. Add value to your U Card or Gopher Gold Card with cash at the ValuePort if needed.
    • Black and white printing is $.12/page (double-sided prints are charged per side, $.24/page)
  2. Print your document (File > Print) from any Bio-Med computer. You will be asked to enter a job name and an ID. You do not need to use a university ID, just a name that you will recognize when you retrieve your print job.
  3. To pick up your print job(s) go to the Uniprint station located on the 2nd floor of the library, next to the circulation desk.
  4. Swipe your U Card or GopherGold card on the keyboard next to the printer.
  5. Select your print job from the list of pending jobs on the computer workstation. The cost will appear on the bottom of the screen. Click Print to accept, and then log out.
  6. All print jobs will stay on the UNIPRINT menu for exactly two hours after you send them. We recommend you pick up your print job as soon as possible

Copying Instructions

Copying is also available on the 2nd floor of Diehl Hall. Self-serve machines accept payment via Gopher GOLD on your U Card or copy card. Departmental users with EFS accounts may also use a departmental copy card.

  1. Add value to your U Card or Gopher Gold Card with cash at the ValuePort if needed.
    • Black and white printing is $.17/page (double-sided prints are charged per side, $.34/page)
  2. Swipe your card through the card reader attached to the copy machine to begin making copies.

Adding Value to a U Card or Copy Card

  • Follow the instructions on the ValuePort, located on the the 2nd floor of the library, to add value to your U Card or Gopher Gold copy card. The ValuePort accepts cash only.
  • You may also add value to your card online using a credit or bank account at the Gopher Gold site.
