Using the Libraries during COVID-19

Though our buildings are currently closed, we are open online and here to help you with teaching, learning, and research.

Public transportation

The library can be accessed by light rail. Take the Green Line, exiting at the East Bank Station.

Building access requirements

U of M students, faculty, and staff required identification and entrances

University students, faculty, and staff can gain library access through any building entrance with a card reader using a valid U Card, Fairview badge, or M Health badge.

General public required identification and entrances

Visitors to the Health Sciences buildings (including the libraries in the Phillips-Wangensteen Building and Health Sciences Education Center) who are not affiliated with the U of M must:

  1. present a valid government-issued photo identification (ID), 
  2. present evidence of a confirmed appointment OR present a Libraries access card, and
  3. use designated public entrances.

Visitors without a Libraries access card or scheduled appointment may request an escort at any designated public entrance. There may be wait times for escorts.

First time visitors or those without a U of M Libraries access card can schedule an appointment to visit the library.

We will send an email confirmation to present in print or on a smartphone at a designated public entrance for library access.

Get a Libraries access card

Repeat visitors can get one of the following Libraries access cards:
  • Guest access card: Get a free access card through an in-person request at any other University Libraries location.
  • Friends of the Libraries card: Join or renew membership at the Friends of the Libraries site for visitor access and additional benefits.
  • Special borrowers card: Eligible members of selected academic institutions and Minnesota government agencies can send a complete special borrower's application in advance of their visit.

Monday - Friday from 7:00 a.m. - 7:00 p.m.
  • 2nd floor Moos Tower - Washington Ave (wheelchair access through Washington Avenue Parking Ramp tunnel)
  • 3rd floor Moos Tower - Delaware circle
  • 2nd floor Mayo Building - Church Street  
Saturday and Sunday from 12:00 p.m. - 5:00 p.m.
